Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

For Senior Veteran Independent Housing

1. Who is eligible to live in your home?

Our homes are for male U.S. military veterans age 62 and older who can live independently. Eligible discharge types include Honorable and General (Under Honorable Conditions).

2. Do you accept female veterans?

No. Our homes are for male veterans age 62 and older only.

Fair Housing Notice:

Honorable & Compassion Living Housing complies with Fair Housing laws. The program serves senior male Veterans age 62+ under lawful shared-housing and veteran-specific exemptions. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, national origin, disability, or family status.

3. What is considered “Independent Living”?

Independent living means the veteran can manage personal care, hygiene, mobility, medications, appointments, and daily routines without assistance.

4. Do you accept HUD-VASH, SSVF, or VA assistance?

Our housing model is long-term shared living. Some housing subsidies, including HUD-VASH and short-term programs, are not compatible with shared housing. Veterans typically use VA income, Social Security, private pay, or other long-term resources to resident in the home.

5. Are meals provided?

No. Residents prepare their own meals in the shared kitchen.

6. Is transportation provided?

Transportation is optional and available upon request for essential needs such as medical appointments, groceries, or errands.

7. Is this assisted living or a medical facility?

No. This is independent shared housing. We do not provide medical care or assisted-living services.

8. Are staff on-site?

No. Bi-Weekly housekeeping is provided for common areas, but there is no on-site staff.

9. How many veterans live in each home?

Up to 4 senior male veterans live together in a 3/4-bedroom, 2-bath home.

10. Are security cameras used?

Yes, in common areas only. Never in bedrooms or bathrooms.

11. Are pets allowed?

No pets allowed.

12. What house rules should residents expect?

Respectful behavior, cleanliness, quiet hours, and adherence to safety guidelines.

13. What is the move-in process?

The move-in process includes submitting the Pre-Screen Form, completing an eligibility review, verifying funding (HUD-VASH, SSVF, VA pension, or other income), signing the resident agreement, and then moving in with personal items only.

14. What should residents bring?

Residents should bring only personal items such as clothing, toiletries, medications, important documents, and optional bedding. Furniture is not allowed, as the home is already fully furnished.

15. Is smoking allowed?

No. Smoking is not allowed inside the home or on the property.

16. What if a resident needs more care later?

If a resident becomes unable to live independently, they would need to transition out of the home. We assist with coordinating alternative placement such as assisted living, supportive housing, or another appropriate care setting.

17. How do Referrals work?

Referrals may be submitted by a case manager or through our online pre-screen waitlist form. Each referral is reviewed for eligibility, housing fit, and funding. Placement depends on availability and confirmed funding. Submission does not guarantee placement.

18. Is housing guaranteed once a referral is submitted?

No. Submitting a referral or pre-screen form places the veteran on our waitlist for review. Housing is not guaranteed and depends on unit availability, program fit, and confirmed funding. Beds are not held while funding is pending.

19. Who should submit the referral?

Referrals are preferred from a VA case manager, housing navigator, or outreach professional. Veterans may submit a self-referral through the online pre-screen waitlist form; however, placement requires professional coordination and confirmed funding.
